The original Half-Dome hat (which you should look at first!) is knitted flat. This is an adaptation of the pattern to knit in the round, large adult size only, posted here with the designer's permission. Caveat: I don't think there are any errors in this, but I haven't actually finished the crown of the hat yet, so it's untested...
Using 3.25 mm needles and contrasting brim colour, CO 132 stitches. Join and work around in stocking stitch [=stockinette] until work measures 1.5 inches. Change to 3.75 mm needles and main colour - using jogless jog for colour change if you wish - and continue in stocking stitch until work measures 5". Proceed with either the no-marker or marker method below.
NO-MARKER METHOD (requires 5 DPNs)
If you're using 5 DPNs, you can use the ends of each of your 4 working needles instead of markers. Ensure you have 33 st on each needle to begin.
Next round: K1, K2tog, K to 3 st before needle end, SSK, K1.
On second needle, K1, K2tog. K to 3 st before needle end, SSK, K1.
On third needle, K1, K2tog. K to 3 st before needle end, SSK, K1.
On fourth needle, K1, K2tog. K to 3 st before needle end, SSK, K1.
K one round plain, then repeat these two rounds 13 times. [20 st on needle.]
Next round: K1, S2KP, K2, S2KP, K2, S2KP, K2, S2KP, K2, K1. [12 st on needle.]
K one round plain. Next round, K2tog, K2, SSK, K2tog, K2, SSK. [8 st.] Finish.
MARKER METHOD (using circular needles and/or DPNS)
Place one marker for start of round and three contrasting markers at intervals of 33 stitches each.
Next round: K1, K2tog, K to 3 st before 1st marker, SSK, K1. Slip marker, K1, K2tog. K to 3 st before 2nd marker, SSK, K1. Slip marker, K1, K2tog. K to 3 st before 3rd marker, SSK, K1. Slip marker, K1, K2tog. K to 3 st before round-start marker, SSK, K1.
K one round plain, then repeat these two rounds 13 times. [20 st on needle.] Remove markers on last plain round.
Next round: K1, S2KP, K2, S2KP, K2, S2KP, K2, S2KP, K2, K1. [12 st on needle.]
K one round plain. Next round, K2tog, K2, SSK, K2tog, K2, SSK. [8 st.] Finish.

You're truly an angel of mercy to post this converted pattern.
On behalf of us boys who don't have large heads and would like the knit the men's regular size hat, would you be so kind as to just explain how to set up the 3 stitch markers for a cast on of 120 stitches? I can figure out the rest from there.
I'd be really greatful for a bit of help.
Thanks again!
aww, thanks! for the regular size, CO 120 as you say, start your decreases at 4.5" instead of 5", and set the markers 30 st apart instead of 33. (In the round, you need 4 markers, not 3, one to mark the start of the round - which should contrast with the others so you don't lose track!)
On the regular size, I think there's one less round to work as the crown gets very small - check the original pattern.
Thanks much! My first Halfdome turned out well, but I had to tinker a lot with the decreases.
I finished this pattern and did not find any errors. Thanks for writing it!
